Mission Impossible

Time really flies. One year has past and my appointment as Local Councillor ends on 6th July 2010. It has been an exciting journey for the past one year as I have learnt many things such as the procedures for local council to handle issues in respective committees. The State EXCO announced the list of 2010/2011 appointed Local Councillors and due to my good performance during the past term, my name are included without doubts.

About two weeks after that, less than 20 peoples started a protest against my re-appointment as Majlis Perbandaran Kajang (MPKj) Local Councillor and claims that I never do my part. Actually, I knows them and what I can say is they have been requesting too much which I can tag those requests as ‘mission impossible’ and tag them as troublemakers who will lodge a complaint merely because they want to complaint. Take an example at Taman Alam Jaya’s open air market. There are almost 60 hawkers with licenses and about 20 are illegal. As a DAP-Pakatan Rakyat Local Councillor who are entrusted by the party to serve the peoples and as a grassroot worker, my concern is all our Rakyat are treated fairly and all of them are given equality of chances. That is the spirit of Malaysians’ Malaysia where the Rakyat are taken care. So, I decided to legalise them by helping them to apply licenses from MPKj. Here comes the problem. The group who complaint against my service demanded to have a say in deciding who are eligible to run businesses at the market and their main concern is no additional fish-mongers are allowed. It is ridiculous! Who are they to say so? Why no fish-mongers? I was puzzled by the issue and wonder why no fish-mongers allowed. At last I found that one of them owns a fish stall in the market and any new comers will be a competitor for him. So, I make no mistake in this issue. As long as the rights of the peoples are protected, I will decide base on it.

To be a good councillor is not an easy job because we are facing various kinds of people with different demands. Some demands are acceptable and some are making things tough for us. I will keep on with my responsibility as a DAP Local Councillor and will work towards a liveable community without prejudice and will not bow to pressures. No matter how, maybe I should thanks the protesters for putting me under the spotlights.
